What is SSC-JE EXAM ?

The Staff Selection Commission is organizing a national-level examination to recruit Junior Engineers in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering for various government departments including CPWD, CWC, MES, Farakka Barrage, BRO, CWPRS, and NTRO. This recruitment is open for both and Diploma holders. Interested candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can read the notification and apply online.

1. Introduction to SSC JE Exam: 

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Junior Engineer (JE) exam is a national-level competitive examination conducted annually to recruit eligible candidates for the post of Junior Engineers in various government departments and organizations. The exam aims to assess the technical and general aptitude of candidates for civil, mechanical, electrical, and quantity surveying & contract disciplines.

2. SSC JE Exam Pattern:

The SSC JE exam consists of two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are conducted in an online computer-based mode.

Paper 1:

  • It is an objective type paper.
  • The duration of the exam is 2 hours.
  • The paper is divided into three sections:

    a) General Intelligence and Reasoning
    b) General Awareness
    c) Technical subjects related to the specific engineering discipline chosen by the candidate (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Quantity Surveying & Contract).

Paper 2:

  • This is a descriptive type paper.
  • It is conducted for candidates who qualify Paper 1.
  • The duration of the exam is 2 hours.
  • Candidates have to answer descriptive questions related to their specific engineering discipline.

3. SSC JE Exam Qualification:

To be eligible for the SSC JE exam, candidates must fulfill the following educational qualifications:

  • For Junior Engineer (Civil/Electrical), candidates must have a degree or diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering from a recognized University or Institution.
  • For Junior Engineer (Mechanical), candidates should possess a degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University or Institution.
  • For Junior Engineer (Quantity Surveying and Contract), candidates should have a degree or diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University or Institution.

4. Age Limit:

The age criteria for appearing in the SSC JE exam vary depending on the post and category of the candidate:

  • Junior Engineer (Civil/Electrical/Mechanical): The age of the candidate should be between 18 and 32 years. However, age relaxations are provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories (OBC, SC, ST, etc.).
  • Junior Engineer (Quantity Surveying and Contract): The maximum age limit is 27 years. Age relaxations are applicable as per government rules.

5. How to Apply for SSC JE Exam:

Candidates can apply for the SSC JE exam through the official website of the Staff Selection Commission. The application process is conducted online, and candidates are required to follow these steps:

a) Visit the official SSC website ( during the application period.
b) Click on the “Apply” link and select the SSC JE Exam from the list of available exams.
c) Fill in the required details in the application form carefully.
d) Upload scanned copies of the candidate’s photograph and signature as per the specified guidelines.
e) Pay the application fee online through the available payment modes.
f) After successful submission, take a printout of the application form for future reference.
